Sweat and Chill? How to practice Contrast Therapy like a Pro

May 22, 2024

Contrast therapy is not a new concept

Contrast therapy is not a new concept (think the Roman Bathhouses) but has emerged in recent years as one of the most popular modalities in the holistic wellness world, with its benefits touted by everyone from doctors and mental health practitioners to athletes, online health gurus and celebrities. But does it really work and how do you get the best

results? Let’s explore this therapeutic practice and why you should add it to your wellness routine!

What is Contrast Therapy?

Very simply, contrast therapy is alternating hot and cold temperatures to cause physical reactions in the body that provide a myriad of health benefits. When you expose your body to heat – the blood vessels dilate; when you switch to cold - the blood vessels constrict.

The resulting pumping action of the circulatory system enhances blood flow, oxygen delivery and nutrient transport to tissues throughout the body, promoting healing and reducing inflammation. Sounds simple enough right? It really is, and it really works!

Who can benefit from Contrast Therapy?

Contrast can help not only with recovery and rehabilitation of injuries, making it great for athletes and those wanting to improve their performance, but also relaxation and overall well-being, making the mental health benefits of this modality just as appealing as the physical. Many have reported a decrease in anxiety and depression symptoms, increased energy levels and focus following the session, and even improved sleep patterns.

There are very few contraindications for hot/cold therapy, although those with cardiovascular issues or sensitivities to extreme temperatures would want to consult with a doctor before beginning. For anyone, it’s best to start slowly and gradually increase the intensity of the temperature differentials over time.

How to Get Started

The easiest way to begin would be right at home by relaxing in a warm bath or hot tub for 3- 5 minutes, followed by a cold shower or ice bath for 1-2 minutes. Repeat this cycle 3-5 times. It is generally preferable to end with cold, and always finish with rest and hydration.

When you are ready to step it up and increase your benefits, try an infrared sauna and cold plunge tub. The infrared sauna goes beyond simple heat therapy and reaches deep into the cells to detoxify and rejuvenate your body on a cellular level. The cold plunge constantly circulates the cold water around you, preventing the thermal barrier from forming that starts to surround your body in still water. This will allow you to lower your body temperature more quickly and more effectively than you could in an ice bath alone.
